Supermarket 'Tsudanuma Battleground' Celebrates Half a Century, Aeon Opens Store at Former Yokado Location
Aeon has opened a new store in Tsudanuma, Chiba, marking another chapter in the long-standing supermarket competition in the area.
The Tsudanuma area in Chiba, Japan, has seen intense retail competition for over fifty years, often referred to as the 'Tsudanuma War'. On the 18th, Aeon opened a mall at the site of the former Ito-Yokado, further solidifying its dominance in the region. This new store is Aeon's third large-scale location in the area, reflecting the company's strategy to capitalize on the growing population in the Tokyo metropolitan area, amidst increasing competition from specialty shops and online retailers.
Historically, the area has been home to major retailers such as Ito-Yokado, Daiei, and Seiyu, which have battled for market share since the 1970s. However, competition has shifted dramatically, with many prominent stores now having closed due to various factors, including the rise of online shopping. In September 2024, the Ito-Yokado store in Tsudanuma will also close, which underscores the changing retail landscape in the face of modern challenges.
The grand opening of 'Aeon Mall Tsudanuma South' attracted approximately 3,000 people, illustrating the ongoing interest and demand for retail in the area. Yukari Murayama, a local resident, expressed her mixed feelings about the transition from Ito-Yokado to Aeon, highlighting the nostalgic value of the former store. This new development not only symbolizes Aeonβs strategy for growth in a competitive market but also reflects the evolving shopping preferences of consumers in the region.
