Disaster Support Convenience Store Prepared for Nankai Trough, Lawson Opens First Store Offering Free Charging
Lawson has opened its first 'disaster support convenience store' in Chiba Prefecture, Japan, designed to assist residents during major disasters like the Nankai Trough earthquake by offering various emergency services.
On the 24th, Lawson opened its first 'disaster support convenience store' in Futtsu City, Chiba Prefecture, close to the entrance of Tokyo Bay, in preparation for major earthquakes such as those predicted from the Nankai Trough. This store was remodeled from the existing Futtsu Minato store, which is situated on elevated ground approximately 50 meters high. Lawson aims to establish 100 such stores along the Pacific coast by the year 2030.
During normal operations, the disaster support convenience store will function like a regular store; however, in times of emergency, it will collaborate with local authorities to serve as a support hub for the community. The first store is equipped with advanced communication facilities that utilize satellites, mobile phone chargers, a kitchen for food preparation, solar panels, and a well for manual water extraction. It will provide essential services during disasters, including free charging for mobile devices and communication needs.
Additionally, the store plans to sell basic onigiri (rice balls) without toppings during crises while offering free tap water, communication services, and toilet facilities that can function even during water outages with the use of gelling agents. This innovative approach aims to ensure that the store remains a vital resource for community support during disasters, reflecting a significant move towards better preparedness in the face of natural calamities.
