Three Powers Square: renovation will be completed by December, says Iphan
The renovation of the Praça dos Três Poderes in Brazil is set to be completed by December 2023, with a total projected cost of R$ 29.1 million.
The Instituto do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional (Iphan) announced on Tuesday, October 17, that the renovation of the Praça dos Três Poderes in Brasília will be completed by December 2023. This first phase of the project focuses on restoring the flooring, drainage system, and paving of the square. Iphan has indicated that a more detailed renovation plan is in place, which includes the restoration of the monuments situated within the square, with expectations for this second phase to be completed by June 2027.
The funding for the renovations is provided through the Lei Rouanet, which supports cultural projects, as the management and financial responsibilities for the square fall under the federal government's purview. Iphan's financial forecast from August 2025 estimated the total expenditure for the renovation at R$ 29.1 million. After the renovation is completed, it will be up to the government of the Federal District to maintain the square, ensuring its upkeep and security, with the GDF stating its commitment to the continuous care of the area.
There has been some criticism regarding the conservation efforts of the square, reflecting concerns about its maintenance over time. The restoration aims not only to enhance its physical attributes but also to address past neglect, with an emphasis on ensuring that the site can be effectively preserved and secured for future generations. As such, the renovation of the Praça dos Três Poderes plays a critical role in both cultural preservation and urban maintenance in Brazil's capital, being a key site of national significance.
