NKVC: Ice blasting in Šilutė is currently not planned after expert evaluation
The NKVC has determined that blasting ice in Šilutė is unnecessary and ineffective based on expert assessments of the situation.
Following an evaluation of inspected areas around Rusnė, including the Atmata and Skirvytė rivers and the Curonian Lagoon, the National Crisis Management Center (NKVC) has concluded that the blasting of ice is neither necessary nor advisable at this time. Specialists have reported that most of the ice in the surveyed river sections has melted, and there are no significant ice jams that would necessitate blasting to alleviate potential flooding risks.
The NKVC emphasizes that decisions regarding any engineering interventions are made responsibly, grounded in real-time assessments by experts to ensure the most effective and safest measures are employed. Currently, blasting operations are deemed to not benefit the situation regarding flood management and would not provide any significant gains in risk reduction.
Moreover, NKVC continues to assist local residents in the coastal area of Šilutė, maintaining heightened vigilance among its services and ensuring ongoing communication with the Šilutė district municipality and local authorities. This collaboration aims to ensure timely support for residents, with quick decision-making protocols ready to be activated if the situation changes.
