A strict warning from firefighters for winter fun enthusiasts: 'There are almost no chances of survival'

Firefighters in Vilnius have issued a stern warning about the dangers of walking on unsafe ice on the Neris River, emphasizing the severe risks involved, especially after recent weather changes.

During a press conference held on Friday by the Vilnius Fire Rescue Department, Chief Giedrius Ruočkus highlighted the increasing number of emergency calls related to people walking on unsafe ice, particularly in the city of Vilnius. In recent days, the department has responded to seven reports of individuals stepping onto the river ice, prompting concerns about public safety as these actions are increasingly common.

Ruočkus noted the current weather conditions, which include precipitation, are causing fluctuations in ice stability. He warned that the ice formed on rivers is almost never safe, and stepping onto it is strictly forbidden. The unique winter weather patterns, including the forecasted rain and other precipitation, could further weaken the ice, putting those who dare to venture onto it at grave risk.

The message from the firefighters is one of caution and public safety, urging individuals to avoid risky activities on the ice. The department aims to raise awareness about the severe consequences of ignoring such warnings amidst a rise in outdoor winter activities in the city. As winter progresses, the potential for accidents on unsafe ice remains critical, especially for those unaware of the dangers involved.
