What are those first steps? Young people living in the Netherlands discuss opportunities to return to Latvia

A group of Latvian students studying in the Netherlands are considering returning to Latvia after completing their studies and gaining work experience.

At least 1,500 Latvian young people are currently studying in the Netherlands, according to the available information from the Latvian embassy. Many of these students, satisfied with their decision to study abroad and the experiences they have gained, are contemplating the possibility of building their careers back in Latvia. To facilitate this dialogue, an event called 'Professional Growth Evening – from the Netherlands to Latvia and Europe' was organized, aimed at connecting students with professionals and resources to help them navigate their return.

Madara Vilde, an initiator of the event and a student in Rotterdam, shared her resolve to return to Latvia after completing her studies and gaining some work experience. However, she expressed uncertainty about the next steps in this transition. This sentiment resonated with other students, leading to the idea of creating a collaborative platform for students to learn from each other and engage with professionals already working in Latvia. The event attracted around 30 participants from various cities in the Netherlands, highlighting the relevance of discussions around career opportunities back home.

Establishing a support network is crucial for these students, as they prepare to navigate their paths after graduation. Latvian Ambassador to the Netherlands, Solvita Āboltiņa, pointed out that when individuals approach the embassy with initiatives for career-oriented events, it reflects a proactive approach to career planning. This engagement not only assists the students in finding their footing in Latvia but also strengthens bonds between the diaspora and their homeland, illustrating the potential for skilled professionals to contribute positively to Latvia's economy in the future.
