Operation targets illegal charcoal scheme in MG and leads to the blocking of over R$ 55 million
An operation by the Civil Police of Minas Gerais has uncovered an illegal charcoal extraction and sales scheme, resulting in the freezing of over R$ 55 million in assets and the suspension of the involved companies' activities.
A recent operation by the Civil Police of Minas Gerais has initiated an investigation into an illegal charcoal production and sales scheme that exploits native forest resources. The probe has targeted a total of 27 individuals and corporations believed to be involved in the illicit activities. The judicial authority has ordered the freezing of approximately R$ 55 million in financial assets, as well as the seizure of over R$ 30,000 in cash and the suspension of operations for the implicated companies.
According to Bianca Landau, the head of the State Department for Environmental Crime Investigations (Dema), the investigations commenced in 2023 following the discovery of a steel mill suspected of extracting charcoal unlawfully. The police reported that the group operated collaboratively to produce, market, and conceal the illegal origin of the charcoal. This was achieved by mixing legal charcoal with illegally sourced material, creating a deceptive appearance of legality and complicating investigations.
The implications of this operation extend beyond just the financial penalties for those involved; it raises concerns regarding environmental degradation and the illegal timber trade in Brazil. As Brazil continues to combat deforestation and illegal land use, this case exemplifies the ongoing struggles against environmental crimes that threaten the country's rich biodiversity and ecological health.
