Civil Police uncovers gang involved in million-dollar theft of minerals at the Port of Santos and blocks R$ 15 million in assets

The Brazilian Civil Police revealed a criminal organization involved in the theft of tungsten and scheelite at the Port of Santos, blocking R$ 15 million in assets and detaining a key suspect.

The Civil Police of Brazil's São Paulo state launched Operation W74 to dismantle a criminal organization implicated in significant mineral thefts at the Port of Santos, a central hub for exports. The operation led to the arrest of one suspect and the seizure of assets valued at R$ 15 million, which included properties and bank accounts associated with the gang members. The targeted minerals, tungsten and scheelite, were reportedly worth about R$ 9.3 million and were identified as being fraudulently exported.

Investigations undertaken by the 1st General Investigation Division (DIG) of the Specialized Division of Criminal Investigations (Deic) in Santos uncovered that the criminals were replacing valuable minerals with much cheaper materials, such as iron powder, concealed within shipping containers awaiting departure. This substitution strategy not only facilitated theft but also posed significant risks to the integrity of international trade practices, as it threatened to undermine the reputation of Brazil's export commodities.

The implications of this bust extend beyond immediate financial losses, as it highlights vulnerabilities within the Brazilian export system. It calls for a comprehensive review of current security measures at ports and the enforcement of stricter regulations regarding cargo exports to mitigate the risk of similar criminal activities in the future, ultimately aiming to protect national interests and uphold trade integrity.
