More than 500 bags of illegal charcoal seized in operation in the interior of Amazonas
Environmental authorities in Brazil seized over 500 bags of illegal charcoal in Itacoatiara, enforcing significant fines and regulations.
The Amazonas Environmental Protection Institute (Ipaam) conducted a significant operation in Itacoatiara, where they seized 524 irregular bags of charcoal and imposed fines exceeding R$ 12,000. This action was part of the first phase of the Metropolitan Region Operation, aimed at combating environmental crimes. During inspections in two illegal storage sites, inspectors confiscated large quantities of illegal charcoal, highlighting ongoing issues related to environmental compliance in the region.
In the first warehouse, 370 bags of charcoal were discovered, leading to a fine of R$ 9,593.40 against the individual responsible, based on violations outlined in the Environmental Crimes Law and federal decrees. The seized charcoal has been transported to a municipal storage facility, which will manage the material until a final decision regarding its disposal is made. This enforcement action reflects the local government's commitment to addressing the illegal charcoal trade effectively.
The second location yielded an additional 154 bags of charcoal, resulting in a fine of R$ 2,774.77 for the operator of that site. The continued seizures serve not only as a punitive measure but also as a deterrent against future violations of environmental regulations in Amazonas. This operation emphasizes the importance of protecting the region's ecological integrity amidst persistent illegal activities that threaten natural resources.
