Police operation seizes about 4.5 tons of drugs in Amazonas
A police operation in Amazonas led to the seizure of approximately 4.5 tons of skunk cannabis being transported by boat, resulting in one arrest.
In a significant police operation in the Amazonas region of Brazil, law enforcement authorities apprehended around 4.5 tons of skunk cannabis being transported via a barge and small boats. The operation took place in the rural community of Chiborema, Iranduba, and was conducted by the Department of Combating Organized Crime (DRCO) on Saturday, October 14. A man was arrested at the scene when authorities intercepted the vessel, which had departed from Manacapuru and was en route to Manaus.
According to the DRCO, the illegal drugs were stored in the barge's hold and were being unloaded at the riverbank at the time of the intervention. Police teams, acting on calls regarding the drug transport, coordinated with tactical units to execute the interception. The swift action resulted in the apprehension of the substantial drug load and the arrest of one member of the crew, who was charged with drug trafficking and taken to a custody hearing.
This seizure underscores the ongoing challenges that Brazil faces in combating drug trafficking, particularly in the Amazon region, where remote and rural areas can serve as transit points for illegal activities. The operation reflects the combined efforts of law enforcement to address the organized crime threats associated with drug transport in Brazil, aiming to disrupt these networks and mitigate their impact on local communities and public safety.
