Police carry out operation against gang that steals cargo from moving trains in SP
The São Paulo Civil Police launched an operation against a gang specialized in stealing soymeal and sugar cargo from moving trains.
On Tuesday morning, the São Paulo Civil Police initiated Operation Ouro Branca to dismantle a criminal gang known for stealing loads of soymeal and sugar transported by railway. The gang's innovative method involved accessing train cars while they were in motion and packaging the stolen cargo. The criminals would then throw bags of stolen product onto the railway tracks for others in their gang to collect when the train passed.
The operation focused on Aguaí, a municipality in the interior of São Paulo, as authorities found that the stolen goods were taken to local warehouses and properties. There, the product was prepared to be sold in the formal market as if it were legally obtained. The investigation revealed that the gang managed to maintain an operation that closely mirrored legitimate commercial practices, raising concerns about the sophistication of such criminal activities.
This operation is part of a broader crackdown on cargo theft in the region, highlighting the ongoing issues of rail cargo security and the challenges faced by law enforcement in addressing these kinds of crimes. As transportation networks become increasingly crucial for trade, operations like this raise awareness about the vulnerabilities that exist within these systems and the need for enhanced protective measures.
