Nissan to Reimport SUV 'Murano' from the U.S. for Launch in Japan in Early 2027
Nissan has announced the reimport of its SUV 'Murano' produced in the U.S., set to launch in Japan in early 2027.
Nissan Motor Co. has revealed plans to reimport the SUV 'Murano', which is currently produced in the United States, to Japan, where it will be launched at the start of 2027. This decision follows recent U.S.-Japan customs negotiations that made it easier for the Japanese government to streamline the import process for American-made vehicles, allowing the Murano to be sold in Japan with its original left-hand drive configuration. The Murano had previously been discontinued in Japan in 2015, marking a significant return of the model after nearly twelve years.
The Murano's reintroduction comes as Nissan aims to tap into the growing demand for larger vehicles in both the American market, where it had been primarily focused, and in Japan, where the company anticipates a steady demand for SUV models. The Murano is expected to be larger than the currently available SUV 'X-Trail' in Japan, offering consumers in the domestic market more options for spacious vehicles. Currently being produced in the Smyrna, Tennessee plant, the Murano's U.S. starting price is approximately $41,670 (about 6.6 million yen), while specifics on its pricing and projected sales figures in Japan are yet to be determined.
This strategic move reflects Nissan's adaptive approach in responding to international market trends and regulatory changes, suggesting a potential shift in consumer preferences within Japan for American-manufactured SUVs. As the automotive industry continues to evolve, the successful re-launch of the Murano could pave the way for more American-made models to enter the Japanese market, potentially influencing market competition and consumer choices in the SUV segment.
