Nissan collaborates with Uber on autonomous taxi service, trial operation to begin in Tokyo
Nissan has announced a partnership with Uber to develop autonomous taxis, with trial operations set to commence in Tokyo later this year.
Nissan Motor Co., currently in the process of restructuring, has revealed its collaboration with U.S.-based ride-hailing giant Uber Technologies to develop autonomous taxi services. The partnership aims to bolster Nissan's investment in self-driving technology and establish a new revenue stream as the company transitions through a phase of growth. The trials are scheduled to begin later in 2023 in Tokyo, marking a significant step in integrating autonomous vehicles into urban transportation networks.
The collaborative effort involves a memorandum of understanding between Nissan, Uber, and Wave Technologies, a UK startup specializing in artificial intelligence for autonomous driving. Nissan is set to utilize its electric vehicle model, the Leaf, integrated with AI technology from Wave, creating a system where these autonomous vehicles can serve as taxis through the Uber platform. This innovative approach combines Nissan's automotive expertise with Uber's established ride-hailing infrastructure, potentially transforming the taxi experience with enhanced safety and efficiency.
To equip these self-driving taxis, Nissan plans to install an advanced sensor suite that includes 14 cameras, nine radar units, and a LiDAR system, which uses laser technology for obstacle detection. Wave's AI is designed to interpret the surroundings of the vehicle, providing real-time situational awareness crucial for safe autonomous operation. This partnership is not only a strategic move for Nissan as it seeks new avenues for growth, but it also positions both companies at the forefront of the rapidly evolving autonomous vehicle market.
