A major training exercise is currently underway near closed border crossing points in southeastern Finland involving national and international authorities.
A significant security exercise is taking place in southeastern Finland, specifically near the closed border crossing points of Imatra, Nuijamaa, and Vaalimaa. This training, conducted by the Southeastern Finland Border Guard, started on March 16 and is scheduled to continue until March 20. The exercise includes participation from both domestic and international authorities, as well as personnel from Frontex, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency.
The exercise aims to enhance the Southeastern Finland Border Guard's capabilities and readiness of cooperating authorities in managing border security challenges. According to Antti Virta, the deputy commander of the Southeastern Finland Border Guard, the entire operational staff of the border guard agency is involved in the ongoing exercise. This comprehensive approach is intended to simulate a challenging border situation to improve inter-agency coordination.
Residents in the areas around Imatra, Nuijamaa, and Vaalimaa may notice increased movement of the troops involved in this training exercise. The authorities have emphasized that the operations are part of planned activities and that there are no heightened security concerns for the local population, indicating a focus on preparedness rather than an immediate response to any threats or incidents.
