Large military exercise begins: Significant impacts on traffic

A major international military exercise named Cold Response 26 begins in Finland, involving 25,000 soldiers from 14 countries, impacting local traffic significantly, particularly in Northern Finland.

The Finnish Defence Forces are set to participate in a large international military exercise known as Cold Response 26, scheduled for March. This exercise will see approximately 25,000 soldiers from 14 different nations taking part, with around 7,500 soldiers participating from Finland alone. The main focus of the military activity will be in Rovajärvi, but movement will also occur across various locations in Northern Finland.

As the military operations begin, the Finnish Defence Forces have warned that troop movements will have a significant effect on traffic in the northern regions. These traffic disruptions are expected to be most pronounced before the combat phase starts on March 9 and continues through March 11, as well as after the conclusion of the exercise from March 19 to March 21. Citizens are being advised to allow extra time for their commutes and exercise special caution near large troop formations.

The primary aim of the Cold Response 26 exercise is to enhance NATO's capacity to defend its northern territories, focusing on collaboration among troops under challenging weather conditions. Additionally, the exercise will also assess Finland's capabilities to respond effectively in such scenarios, highlighting the nation's strategic role in regional security for NATO and its allies.
