Chile increases beef purchases by 52% and becomes the 3rd largest market for MT
Chile has increased its beef imports from Mato Grosso by 52.4% in January compared to the same period last year, making it the third-largest market for beef from the state.
Chile has significantly boosted its beef imports from the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso, with purchases rising by 52.4% in January compared to last year, according to a release from the Instituto Mato-grossense da Carne (Imac). This surge in demand has positioned Chile as the third-largest destination for beef exports from Mato Grosso, reflecting the growing importance of the Chilean market for the region's agricultural sector.
Mato Grosso is home to a substantial cattle inventory of nearly 34 million head of cattle, ranking among the largest in Brazil. The total volume of beef exported to Chile rose from 2.7 thousand tons to 4.2 thousand tons, indicating a strong demand for the protein source. The increase aligns with broader trends within the beef market, as producers look to diversify their export markets and adapt to changing global demand dynamics.
In 2025, Chile had already established itself as the third-largest buyer of beef from Mato Grosso, acquiring 47.7 thousand tons and reflecting a growth of 44.8% from the previous year when it imported 32.5 thousand tons. This consistent trend signifies a strategic shift in market preferences and suggests that Chile could play a pivotal role in the future of the beef trade from Mato Grosso, enhancing economic ties between the two regions and influencing local agricultural production strategies.
