Bauchi government receives N600m UNICEF nutrition supplements
The Bauchi State Government in Nigeria received nutrition supplements worth approximately N600 million from UNICEF to combat child malnutrition.
The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) has delivered nutrition commodities valued at about N600 million to the Bauchi State Government in Nigeria. This initiative aims to address the alarming rates of malnutrition among children in the region. The nutrition supplies include Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food and Small Quantity Lipid-Based Nutrient Supplements, which were procured through the Child Nutrition Fund and specifically aimed at treating and preventing severe and moderate malnutrition among children.
During the handover ceremony held in Bauchi, UNICEFβs Chief of Field Office, Dr. Nuzhat Rafique, highlighted the urgency of the situation, noting that Bauchi is among the states with the highest prevalence of child malnutrition in Nigeria, with around 16 percent of children aged six months to three years categorized as undernourished. The distribution of 4,562 cartons of Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food and 15,419 cartons of Small Quantity Lipid-Based Nutrient Supplements is expected to substantially impact local nutrition practices and health outcomes.
Dr. Rafique emphasized the importance of improving nutrition habits within households to combat the ongoing malnutrition crisis. This initiative from UNICEF is crucial as it not only provides immediate nutritional support but also raises awareness of the critical need for sustainable nutrition practices among families in Bauchi State, where the figures on child malnutrition remain concerning and require collective action to improve the well-being of the youngest population in the region.
