Police arrest suspect after gunfight with tanker robbers in Oyo
Oyo State Police have arrested a suspect following a gunfight with highway robbers who had targeted a diesel tanker.
The Oyo State Police Command successfully thwarted a highway robbery attempt on the Ogbomoso–Ilorin Expressway, resulting in the arrest of a suspected armed robber during a joint operation with local vigilantes. The robbery took place when a group of armed robbers blocked the highway and attempted to hijack a tanker carrying diesel, leading to a confrontation with law enforcement personnel. The incident highlighted the ongoing issues of highway robberies in the region, underscoring the collaborative efforts of the police and local communities in combating such crimes.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, the patrol team met the gang at Egbeda Village, where the robbers had already dispossessed the tanker driver of his belongings. The encounter escalated into a gunfight, allowing the police to apprehend 32-year-old Dere Yahaya, while other gang members fled into nearby bush areas, reportedly sustaining gunshot wounds during the altercation. This incident not only showcases the immediate action by the police in response to violent crime but also raises concerns about safety on the roads in Nigeria, especially for commercial drivers transporting goods.
The arrest of Yahaya may lead to further investigations into the gang’s operations and possibly help identify other members involved in similar criminal activities. The proactive response from the police, in collaboration with local vigilantes, signifies a strategic approach to enhancing security on highways known for frequent robberies. As incidents like this continue to affect the transportation sector and public safety, the need for comprehensive strategies to combat organized crime in Nigeria remains critical.
