Officials thwart attempts to smuggle prohibited items into Pravieniškės II and Šiauliai prisons
Lithuanian prison officials intercepted attempts to smuggle mobile phones and possibly drug-laced cigarettes into two prisons.
Officials from the Lithuanian Prison Service at Pravieniškės II prison apprehended an individual attempting to throw packages into the prison grounds. The individual was caught carrying four packages wrapped in tape, which upon inspection revealed eight mobile phones hidden inside. This incident has led to the initiation of administrative proceedings against the individual for their attempt to smuggle prohibited items into the prison.
Meanwhile, officers at Šiauliai prison noticed inmates trying to retrieve another package that had been thrown over the prison walls. The retrieval operation was successful, resulting in the package being cut down and confiscated. Inside, authorities found a smartphone and seven cigarettes, which are suspected to have been sprayed with narcotic or psychotropic substances. Law enforcement is currently conducting an investigation into the contents of this package and the circumstances around the incident.
These events highlight ongoing security issues within Lithuanian prisons as authorities continue to grapple with the challenges of smuggling contraband items into correctional facilities. The response from prison officials indicates vigilance and a proactive approach to maintaining order and safety within the institutions, reflecting the broader struggles faced by prison systems globally regarding contraband management.
