Pedestrians or cyclists injured in traffic accidents can apply for free legal assistance
Pedestrians, cyclists, and electric scooter riders injured in traffic accidents in Latvia can apply for free legal assistance to obtain fair compensation for injuries caused by unsafe infrastructure.
In Latvia, individuals who have suffered injuries in traffic accidents, specifically pedestrians, cyclists, and electric scooter riders, are now eligible for free legal assistance. This initiative was announced by the non-profit organization "PilsΔta cilvΔkiem", which has collaborated with legal professionals to support these vulnerable road users in navigating the legal system to secure just compensation for their injuries. The legal aid is particularly aimed at cases where accidents have occurred as a result of hazardous road infrastructure, holding road administrators accountable for such incidents.
According to data from 2024, the average rate of road traffic fatalities in the European Union stands at 45 deaths per one million inhabitants, a statistic that is particularly alarming for Latvia, which ranks fifth highest in the EU in terms of road fatalities. The organization highlights that a significant portion of traffic accidents can be attributed to unsafe or poorly planned infrastructure. This raises concerns about urban planning and public safety, necessitating a comprehensive approach to not only support victims but also critically evaluate and improve existing road conditions.
The project is financially backed by the Society Integration Fund, funded by allocations from the Latvian state budget. This governmental support underscores the recognition of the urgent need for better safety measures on roads and the acknowledgment of the marginalized groups within the traffic ecosystem, ensuring that those who are injured receive the necessary legal guidance to pursue their rights and justice in the face of adverse circumstances.
