In a challenging mixed team biathlon relay in Otepã, Latvia faced challenges with their shooting accuracy, resulting in them being overtaken and finishing behind the leaders.
The mixed team biathlon relay in Otepã saw Latvia enter the race with a 15th starting number, after Greenland withdrew from the competition, which initially had 27 teams slated to participate. The race, affected by windy conditions, was dominated by the Norwegian team of Sturla Holmes Legreid and Karolīne Knotene, who finished in a remarkable time of 40 minutes and 39.3 seconds, despite using eight spare cartridges during the race. This victory marked Legreid's third consecutive gold medal in three competitions, emphasizing his dominance in the sport recently.
The silver medal was claimed by the Swedish team consisting of Sebastians Samuelsons and Hanna Ēberga, who incurred three penalty laps and utilized 13 spare ammunition cartridges, finishing over a minute and a half behind the Norwegians. Finnish competitors Tero Sepala and Suvi Minkinen took the bronze after completing one penalty lap and using 15 spare cartridges, showcasing the crucial importance of shooting precision in biathlon events where every second counts.
A notable incident occurred when the race leader, Emiljēns Žaklēns from France, made a critical error during his final shooting round, using one extra spare cartridge, which resulted in the disqualification of the French team. This incident highlights the high-stakes nature of biathlon, where a single mistake can derail a team's chances, as seen in Latvians' struggle with shooting accuracy amidst the competition.
