Navy catches boats without licenses and seizes more than 100 on the coast of SP
The Brazilian Navy seized 108 boats and notified 539 for irregularities during a safety operation in São Paulo.
The Brazilian Navy conducted the 'Operação Navegue Seguro 2025/2026' along the coast of São Paulo from December 17, 2025, to March 11, 2026. During this operation, a total of 4,757 boats were approached, resulting in the seizure of 108 vessels deemed to be operating without the necessary licenses. The operation took place in 151 municipalities and aimed to enhance safety in navigable areas. The São Paulo Port Authority reported a firmer maritime presence in regions known for a high volume of maritime traffic and areas that had received complaints regarding illegal activities.
As part of the operation, the Brazilian Navy conducted 57 alcohol tests for boat operators in a bid to prevent drunk driving on water. The inspections resulted in a significant number of notifications, with 539 vessels cited for various irregularities. The Navy emphasized the importance of adherence to the Aquatic Traffic Safety Law (Lesta) to ensure the safety of both the boats and individuals using these waterways. The enforcement involved the coordination of 205 military personnel along with 13 boats and nine vehicles focusing on critical areas such as beaches, rivers, reservoirs, and navigable lakes.
The Navy's actions are particularly crucial in light of increased recreational boating activities along the São Paulo coastline. The operation is a timely reminder of the importance of safety regulations in preventing accidents and fatalities on the water. By targeting known trouble spots and enforcing compliance, the Navy aims to create a safer environment for all waterway users, ultimately fostering responsible boating practices among the public.
