Boats used in illegal mining are seized in an operation in AM

Five boats used for illegal gold mining were seized by the Federal Police in Iranduba, Brazil, during a joint operation with environmental and security bodies.

On Thursday, five boats utilized for illegal gold mining were confiscated in Iranduba, a municipality in the Metropolitan Region of Manaus, Brazil. This operation, named Yacumama, was conducted by the Federal Police in collaboration with environmental agencies and security forces. Illegal mining, particularly in the Amazon, poses serious environmental threats, including mercury contamination of rivers and jeopardizing the livelihoods of traditional communities.

According to the Federal Police, among the seized equipment was a push boat, an operational dredge, and four other boats located in a clandestine shipyard. These vessels were reportedly undergoing repairs to become operational again. This illustrates the ongoing challenge authorities face in combating illegal mining activities that occur in prohibited areas such as indigenous lands and conservation units.

The involved agencies reiterated the environmental damages caused by illegal mining, notably the contamination of waterways with mercury, which is detrimental to both the ecosystem and human health. Furthermore, these illegal operations are categorized as usurpation of federal assets, highlighting their criminal nature. The action taken reflects a concerted effort by Brazilian authorities to enforce laws protecting the Amazon and its vulnerable communities.
