Environmental Police seizes 450 meters of nets and returns 40 kg of fish to a river in the interior of SP
Environmental police in Brazil seized illegal fishing nets and released fish back into the Paraná River during a recent operation.
The Environmental Military Police carried out a successful operation in Rosana, São Paulo, where they apprehended 450 meters of fishing nets that were illegally installed in the Paraná River. This operation took place on Sunday, the 8th, during a nautical patrol downstream from the Sérgio Motta Hydroelectric Plant, an area recognized for its conservation significance. During the action, the police located approximately 40 kg of fish caught in the nets and promptly returned them to their natural habitat in the river.
These illegal nets were found dangerously close to a fish ladder designed to facilitate the movement of aquatic life past the dam. The fact that these nets lacked mandatory identification tags further emphasized their illegal status, as well as the risks they pose to local fish populations. Among the species found were notable examples such as cascudo, apaiari, piranha, and porquinho, which are crucial to the local ecosystem.
This initiative illustrates the ongoing efforts by environmental authorities in Brazil to combat illegal fishing practices and protect biodiversity in vulnerable areas. Such operations not only serve to enforce the law but also raise awareness about the importance of safeguarding aquatic ecosystems from detrimental human activities, reinforcing the notion that conservation measures are essential for maintaining ecological balance in the region.
