Environmental Police catches illegal fishing and seizes 62 kg of fish in the interior of SP
Environmental police in São Paulo intercepted illegal fishing activities, seizing over 60 kilograms of fish and equipment.
São Paulo's Environmental Police conducted a patrol along the Aguapeí River in Lucélia where they discovered two men engaging in illegal fishing using prohibited nets. The officers attempted to apprehend the fishermen, but they escaped by jumping into the river, leaving behind a sizable haul of fish and the fishing equipment. The total weight seized included 62.5 kilograms of various species, which were in good health and suitable for human consumption.
The seized equipment and fish were taken to the Dracena Environmental Police headquarters. Due to the sanitary conditions of the confiscated fish, the police decided to donate them to a local charitable organization, the Lar Beneficente Sã Doutrina Espiritual de Dracena, rather than destroying them. This action highlights the police's commitment to not only enforcing environmental laws but also promoting community welfare through their operations.
Such interventions are critical in combatting illegal fishing practices in Brazil, where overfishing and environmental violations pose serious threats to local aquatic ecosystems. The successful apprehension in Lucélia serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts to protect natural resources and maintain ecological balance in the region.
