UP TO 400 THOUSAND eID CARDS IN LATVIA MAY LOSE e-SIGNATURE VALIDITY AS EARLY AS JUNE

Approximately 400,000 eID cards in Latvia are at risk of losing their e-signature validity by June due to expiring certificates.

The Digital Security Oversight Committee convened in an emergency meeting last week, prompted by concerns that around 400,000 electronic ID (eID) cards in Latvia will no longer be able to renew their qualified electronic signature certificates starting in June this year. Without action, the e-signatures attached to these cards could lose their legal validity, impacting a significant number of citizens who rely on them for electronic transactions. This situation arises as a result of changes to European regulations affecting the validity periods of such certificates.

The timing of this crisis is particularly troubling, as a significant number of these eID cards will reach the end of their certification in June. The urgency is underscored by the fact that some solutions are just now being sought, despite the looming deadline and the fact that the potential for this issue has been evident since the relevant European regulation was updated in 2024. The Digital Security Oversight Committee acknowledged having begun to explore these issues last year but are faced with a rapidly approaching deadline with insufficient actions taken to prevent the impending complications.

As a consequence, if no measures are implemented in time, individuals who depend on these electronic IDs for signing documents electronically may find themselves unable to legally operate in various official capacities. This scenario not only jeopardizes the day-to-day activities of citizens but could also lead to broader administrative challenges for public and private sectors that require reliable electronic documentation, highlighting the need for swift governmental intervention to resolve the matter before June.
