A serious chip problem found in new ID cards

Many Estonians with new ID cards issued since November are experiencing malfunctioning chips, preventing access to banking and tax services.

Since November, several Estonians have reported issues with the chips in their newly issued ID cards, which have become inoperable. This malfunction impedes their ability to log into bank accounts and access tax services, along with disabling other related services such as customer cards linked to the ID card. The situation poses significant inconvenience for users who rely heavily on these digital services for various everyday transactions.

The Police and Border Guard Board acknowledges the ongoing issue and is actively collaborating with Thales, the responsible company, to identify the root causes of this malfunction. Although the problem has been recognized, there has yet to be a comprehensive solution, resulting in frustrations among the users who expected their new ID cards to function effectively and securely.

This revelation raises concerns regarding the reliability of digital ID systems in Estonia, a country that has embraced digital services and e-governance extensively. As authorities investigate the problem, it will be crucial for them to communicate effectively with the public to mitigate concerns and restore confidence in their digital identity solutions.
