Lagos moves to enhance regulation of cosmetic products, procedures
The Lagos State Government is strengthening regulations on cosmetic products and procedures following a recent related death.
The Lagos State Government has initiated steps to enhance the regulation of cosmetic products and procedures by presenting the National Policy on Cosmetics Safety and Health along with its Implementation Plan. This formal presentation was made by the Director of Public Affairs during the Exit Meeting of the Lagos State Engagement on the National Policy on Cosmetics Safety and Health. The engagement unfolded at the Lagos State Ministry of Health, concluding a significant four-day stakeholder discussion aimed at addressing the pressing issues surrounding cosmetic safety in the state.
A critical aspect prompting this initiative is the increase in concerns related to cosmetic surgery safety, underscored by a recent death linked to cosmetic procedures in Lagos. Dr. Kemi Ogunyemi, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Health, highlighted that the timing of this engagement is crucial as it coincides with ongoing investigations by the Health Facilities Monitoring and Accreditation Agency into the incident. The aim is to ensure that safety standards are maintained and that such tragic incidents are minimized in the future.
The proposed policy is expected to bring about significant changes in how cosmetic procedures are regulated, including stricter oversight and enforcement measures. This move reflects a growing recognition of the potential dangers associated with unregulated cosmetic procedures and the need for a robust framework to protect public health. Stakeholders in the cosmetic industry are encouraged to comply with forthcoming regulations that prioritize safety and the well-being of consumers, as the state takes proactive measures in safeguarding public health.
