Complications in aesthetic procedures soar and push for stricter regulations in Brazil

The number of complaints related to complications from aesthetic procedures is rapidly increasing in Brazil, raising concerns for stricter regulations in the industry.

Brazil is witnessing a significant rise in the number of complaints regarding complications from aesthetic procedures, paralleling the growth of a market valued at approximately R$ 40 billion annually. This boom has established Brazil as a global leader in aesthetic treatments, but it has also raised alarm bells regarding patient safety. Data from the Regional Council of Medicine of the State of SΓ£o Paulo (Cremesp) indicates that the number of investigations into medical professionals jumped from 2,830 in 2023 to 4,002 in 2025, an increase of about 41% in just two years.

The concerns extend beyond medical doctors to non-medical professionals engaged in performing aesthetic procedures. Since 2024, Cremesp has begun receiving reports from patients who suffered adverse effects following invasive aesthetic interventions conducted by dentists, biomedical professionals, physiotherapists, among others. The initial year saw 248 complaints, which nearly doubled to 472 in 2025, resulting in a total of 44 lawsuits. Most of these complaints are concentrated around facial fillers and the use of substances intended for body sculpting, highlighting a concerning trend in safety standards across the sector.

In response to the escalating issues, there is growing pressure from both the public and medical community for the Brazilian government to implement stricter regulations governing aesthetic procedures. As more patients experience complications, the demand for regulatory oversight has intensified, aiming to ensure that those offering such services are adequately qualified and that patients are protected from potential harm. This situation not only affects patient health but also has wider implications for Brazil's reputation as a leading destination for cosmetic surgery, potentially influencing consumer behavior and industry trust moving forward.
