Seimas Will Consider the Restructuring of the Customs Department

The Lithuanian parliament is set to discuss a proposal to restructure the Customs Department, which includes merging several subordinate institutions into one legal entity.

The Lithuanian Seimas is preparing to debate a reform proposal put forth by the Ministry of Finance regarding the restructuring of the Customs Department. This plan suggests the dissolution of the legal entity status for eight institutions currently under the department, merging them into a single entity. The Ministry asserts that this change is intended to streamline operations and enhance the efficiency of the Customs Department, aligning with recommendations from the European Union.

Finance Minister Kristupas Vaitiekūnas emphasized that the proposed restructuring could lead to a more effective operational framework for the department, ultimately aiming to reduce administrative costs by up to 30%. By consolidating the administrative functions, the ministry believes they can achieve significant savings while also improving the overall management of customs operations in Lithuania. This is seen as a critical step in modernizing the customs system, which is a pivotal aspect of the country’s trade infrastructure.

In conjunction with this reform, the recruitment process for the new Director General of the Customs Department is currently underway, with Žaneta Rudaitienė, the deputy of the current director, winning the selection process thus far. The ongoing changes and leadership shifts within the Customs Department reflect a comprehensive effort by the Lithuanian government to enhance its fiscal governance and adapt to EU standards, setting a precedent for similar initiatives across public institutions.
