“Linava” leader: for now we have no information that trucks stuck in Belarus would be confiscated
The leader of the Lithuanian transport organization, Linava, stated that there is currently no confirmed information about the confiscation of trucks stuck in Belarus, although there are concerns about the impending deadline.
The head of the Lithuanian transport association Linava, E. Mikėnas, reported that there is no confirmed information regarding the confiscation of trucks from Lithuania and other EU countries that are currently stranded in Belarus. While there have been some fragmented reports from certain carriers regarding invitations to customs, the majority of operators have not corroborated these claims. As of March 10, a four-month period has lapsed, after which the Minsk regime could legally confiscate these vehicles, supposedly held in special parking lots.
Mikėnas explained that the March 10 deadline appears deliberate, referencing a Belarusian law that allows for confiscation after four months. Although he emphasized that they cannot confirm that confiscations are actually occurring, he believes that a resolution to the ongoing issue for these stranded trucks will soon be forthcoming. Concerns have escalated among transport operators, particularly regarding the potential repercussions this situation may have on their businesses, with Mikėnas suggesting that bankruptcy could become inevitable for some.
The situation poses significant challenges not only for the transport sector in Lithuania but also for broader economic relations between the EU and Belarus. As this issue unfolds, stakeholders on both sides are watching closely, hoping for a resolution that would mitigate the financial impact on transportation companies affected by these regulations.
