No One is Moving: Belarus Does Not Return Trucks, But Sends Bills for Mandatory Parking

Lithuanian trucking companies' vehicles remain detained in Belarus while they receive bills for their storage.

The situation concerning Lithuanian trucking companies remains dire, with their vehicles still detained in Belarusian territory. According to E. Mikėnas from the Lithuanian Road Transport Association (Linava), there have been no confirmed cases of trucks or trailers being returned to their owners. The continued detainment has become a source of growing frustration as companies are not only unable to retrieve their vehicles but are also being charged bills for their storage. Each vehicle incurs a daily fee of approximately 120 euros, along with requirements to sign service agreements.

Mikėnas further elaborated that there have been no significant changes in the practice of billing or detaining the vehicles recently, emphasizing the lack of improvements in how these issues are being handled. The association has gathered data on the detained vehicles from its members and has communicated this information to the responsible Lithuanian authorities. The growing financial burden on Lithuanian truck operators due to these detentions is a significant concern, impacting their operations and overall business health.

In response to the situation, further actions are being planned, including addressing issues of contraband goods flowing from Belarus into Lithuania. I. Ruginienė has indicated progress in combating the influx of smuggled items, highlighting ongoing efforts to curtail illegal activities that exploit the current tensions. The ongoing detainment and subsequent fees put immense pressure on the relationship between Lithuania and Belarus, underscoring the geopolitical complexities at play in the region where transport and trade are heavily influenced by political factors.
