R. Motuzas highlights that truck issues in Belarus are being politically exploited, particularly following Lithuania's closure of its border with Belarus as a response to the regime's actions.
R. Motuzas, in an interview with LRT radio, expressed that the challenges surrounding trucks in Belarus have become hostages to political pressure exerted by the Belarusian regime. He explains that the political dynamics, especially after the 2020 elections in Belarus, have significantly influenced this situation as Lithuania has not recognized Alexander Lukashenko's regime and has imposed certain isolation measures against it.
Motuzas emphasizes the need for Lithuania to address the costs borne by Lithuanian carriers and indicates that the association representing these carriers, 'Linava', has sought assistance from the European Commission. However, he cautions that there are no guarantees regarding compensation for losses experienced by the transport sector. This highlights the interconnectedness of political actions and economic repercussions affecting businesses.
In response to these ongoing issues, some retaliatory measures against the Minsk regime are being considered. Motuzas advocates for a collective effort towards addressing the situation, suggesting that a unified approach to engage with European partners is critical at this juncture to alleviate the burdens faced by Lithuanian transporters.
