Pank won one match at the U-23 European Championships, Chopalaev continues in the consolation round
Estonian wrestler Eerik Pank won one match at the U-23 European Championships in Serbia, while Al-Bara Chopalaev continues on in the consolation round after a loss in the first round.
At the U-23 European Wrestling Championships taking place in Zrenjanin, Serbia, Estonian wrestlers Eerik Pank and Al-Bara Chopalaev competed on Friday. In the Greco-Roman wrestling category, Chopalaev faced the Russian wrestler Dordzhi Shungurtsikov in the first round and lost with a score of 0:3. However, since Shungurtsikov advanced to the finals, Chopalaev has the opportunity to continue competing in the consolation round, where he will meet Greek wrestler Marios Kapantais. The winner of this match will then advance to a bronze medal match against Swedish wrestler Jan Algot Gamelius.
Meanwhile, Eerik Pank had a more successful first round, coming from a 0:3 deficit to win against Turkish wrestler Huseyin Avni Cili, finishing with a score of 3:3. However, his journey was halted in the quarterfinals after losing 1:9 to Polish wrestler Sebastian Warchol. Since Warchol also lost in the semifinals, Pank could not continue further into the consolation rounds.
Looking ahead, three more Estonian wrestlers are set to begin their competitions on Saturday: Artur Jeremejev in the 72 kg category, Ekke Kรตu Leitham in the 82 kg category, and Robin Uspenski in the 97 kg category. Jeremejev will enter the competition in the preliminary round while Leitham is set to compete in the 1/8 finals. This ongoing event highlights the participation of Estonian talent in international wrestling competitions and their efforts at continental championships.
