On Friday, the 13th, the ship Professor W. Besnard tilted at the Port of Santos in São Paulo, Brazil, while docked at Parque Valongo. The Santos Port Authority (APS) reported that the vessel, which is currently not operational, is now resting on the bottom of the estuary, but thankfully, no injuries were reported. In response to the situation, APS has fenced off the area on land and deployed containment barriers in the sea to prevent environmental accidents due to potential oil leaks into the estuary. Additionally, they have notified the São Paulo Harbor Master's Office about the incident, showing a proactive approach to maintaining safety and environmental integrity. The ship is owned by the Instituto do Mar and is currently occupying space at the port while waiting for the owners to arrange for its eventual restoration. The APS Operations Directorate assured that all possible measures have been taken and emphasized that there is no risk to navigation in the Port of Santos, as the ship tilted right next to the pier, with procedures in place to ensure safety in the area.
