Container ship collides with two barges at the Port of Santos, and crew jumps into the sea; VIDEO
A Singapore-flagged container ship crashed into two barges at the Port of Santos, causing crew members to jump overboard, although they were later rescued unharmed.
A serious incident occurred at the Port of Santos when the Singapore-flagged container ship Seaspan Empire collided with two barges, FB-14 and FB-15, that were crossing the channel around 10 PM on Monday. Thankfully, these barges were not carrying any vehicles or passengers at the time of the accident, and only four crew members, including the captain, were onboard. As the ship moved too close while exiting the canal and couldn't find space to dock, the crew members jumped into the water to avoid the collision. Fortunately, all four were swiftly rescued by boats without injuries.
The collision highlights safety concerns within the busy Port of Santos, renowned as one of Brazil's primary ports, facilitating significant shipping traffic. It raises awareness about navigational safety and the urgent need for improved measures to prevent accidents as shipping activities increase. The ability to maintain the safety of both maritime crews and those on the vessels is becoming increasingly critical as trade continues to expand.
Authorities, including the Capitania dos Portos de São Paulo (CPSP), have been informed and are likely to investigate the incident thoroughly. As investigations unfold, there may be implications for shipping protocols and the operating procedures of the port, particularly regarding how situations like overcrowding are managed. The outcomes could potentially influence regulations surrounding vessel traffic and safety procedures in Brazil's major port facilities.
