Rivers court sentences three to death by hanging for murder
A Rivers State High Court sentenced three individuals to death by hanging for the murder of a pharmacist in Port Harcourt, Nigeria.
A Rivers State High Court in Port Harcourt has sentenced Confidence Kirinee, Precious Mona, and Soniabari Sagha to death by hanging for their involvement in the murder of pharmacist Muenalo Sunday. The court found them guilty of multiple charges including conspiracy, cultism, kidnapping, and murder, with the crime having been committed in March 2019 in the Zaakpo community of Khana Local Government Area.
In addition to the death sentences for the trio, the court also sentenced another individual, Loveday Legah, to life imprisonment for his association with a secret cult group whose members were implicated in the pharmacist's murder. The severe penalties reflect the court's stance against cult-related violence and criminal activities in the region, emphasizing the judicial system's commitment to tackling such crimes.
Justice Augusta Chukwu, who presided over the case, asserted that the prosecution succeeded in establishing the charges against the convicted individuals. The case highlights ongoing issues with cultism in Nigeria, particularly in Rivers State, where such groups have been linked to an increase in violent crimes and societal instability.
