Nigeria: Kwara Court Sentences Two Bandits to Death By Hanging

A Kwara State High Court has sentenced two men to death by hanging for armed robbery and related crimes, following their involvement in a kidnapping case.

In a significant ruling by the Kwara State High Court in Ilorin, two men, Abubakar Sodiki and Abubakar Mohammed, have been sentenced to death by hanging for their roles in armed robbery and kidnapping. The court found the defendants guilty of six charges, including criminal conspiracy, armed robbery, and illegal possession of firearms. In addition to the death sentence, the court imposed life imprisonment for kidnapping and a 10-year sentence for illegal possession of firearms.

During the trial, evidence presented by the victim, Alhaji Saheed Arowasi, played a crucial role in establishing the defendants' guilt. Arowasi recounted how he was kidnapped and held for ransom, initially set at N100 million, which was later negotiated down to N10 million before his eventual release. Justice Ahmed Aliyu Gegele, who delivered the judgment, highlighted the comprehensive evidence, including testimonies from the suspects and the victim, that led to the court's decision.

This case underscores the ongoing challenges of armed robbery and kidnapping in Nigeria, as the court's ruling reflects the legal system's commitment to addressing serious crimes and the need for effective deterrence against such offenses. The sentences, particularly the death penalty, may provoke discussions on the effectiveness and morality of capital punishment in the fight against banditry and violent crime in the region.
