Rivers vigilante leader, two others arrested for torturing man to death
Three individuals, including a local vigilante leader, have been arrested in Rivers State for allegedly torturing a man to death amid accusations of theft.
The Rivers State Police Command has apprehended three individuals, including the chairman of a local vigilante group, for their alleged involvement in the torture and subsequent death of a man named Ghadafi. The incident took place in the Ahoada West Local Government Area, where the suspects allegedly assaulted Ghadafi, accusing him of stealing palm fruits. Reports indicate that they were attempting to dispose of his body when they were intercepted by security operatives and local youths, leading to their arrest.
Witnesses indicated that Ghadafi's body was found in a horrific condition, with his hands and legs bound, highlighting the brutal nature of the alleged crime. The Chief Security Officer of the Ukpeliede Community, Mr. Osiga King, provided insights into the sequence of events, noting that the community has been experiencing increasing invasions by such vigilante groups. King also mentioned that during their detention, the suspects confessed to their crime, shedding light on the rampant issue of extrajudicial actions taken by local security outfits.
The case underscores severe concerns about vigilante groups operating outside the law in Nigeria, raising questions about community safety and the rule of law. As public outcry mounts regarding extrajudicial killings, authorities may be pressured to enforce stricter regulations on vigilante activities, aiming to protect citizens from unlawful acts and ensure justice is served in such grave matters.
