Actor Lee Jae-ryong charged with obstruction of drunk driving measurement

Actor Lee Jae-ryong has been additionally charged for obstructing a drunk driving measurement following a hit-and-run incident.

Lee Jae-ryong, a 62-year-old actor, has been accused of hitting a central divider with his vehicle while driving under the influence on the night of June 6 in Gangnam, Seoul. After the incident, he fled the scene and stayed at a friend's house until being apprehended by police about three hours later. Authorities reported that his blood alcohol concentration was at a level sufficient to suspend his driving license, and he is now facing additional charges for obstructing the police from administering a breathalyzer test. The police suspect that after the accident, Lee tried to evade the alcohol measurement and consumed more alcohol, complicating their ability to accurately assess his blood alcohol level. They plan to use the Widmark formula, which calculates blood alcohol concentration based on factors such as alcohol intake, weight, and sex, to estimate his level at the time of the incident. Investigations will also include questioning other individuals who were present during the incident to gather more information. Lee's initial statements to the police suggested that he denied being under the influence while driving, claiming to have only had four glasses of soju and believing he merely touched the central divider. South Korea's current traffic laws mandate that obstructing a drunk driving measurement can lead to imprisonment for one to five years or fines ranging from 5 million to 20 million won. This law was implemented following a notorious drunk driving and hit-and-run case involving trot singer Kim Ho-joong, making it a significant point of legal scrutiny in the country.
