VSAT: no illegal migrants recorded for fourteen days
The Lithuanian border authorities have reported no illegal migrants crossing from Belarus for two weeks, while Polish border guards turned back three individuals on Wednesday.
The State Border Guard Service of Lithuania (VSAT) reported that there have been no illegal migrants recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus for fourteen days. This positive development follows a trend from the previous year when officials prevented more than 1,600 individuals from unlawfully entering Lithuania. This year, however, only 37 unauthorized migrants have been stopped from entering, marking a significant decrease in migrant crossings compared to prior years.
In addition, Latvian border guards have also not recorded any illegal migrants during this period. Meanwhile, Polish authorities reported having turned away three illegal foreigners on Wednesday as part of their ongoing efforts to control the influx of migrants from the Belarusian border. This uptick in border enforcement is part of a broader response to the migration crisis that has been attributed to geopolitical tensions involving Belarus.
The current situation has roots in a migration crisis that began in 2021, when migrants began to arrive in Eastern European Union countries. Western nations have accused the regime in Minsk of deliberate action to push migrants towards the EU as a form of political pressure. The significant reduction in the number of migrants this year compared to previous years may reflect the improved border controls or changes in migrant behavior, providing a mixed bag of implications for the ongoing geopolitical situation in the region.
