VSAT: eleven days without recording illegal migrants
Lithuanian border authorities report no illegal migrant crossings from Belarus for eleven days, contrasting with a significant influx in the past years.
According to reports from Lithuania's border authorities, there has been a notable absence of recorded illegal migrant crossings from Belarus for the past eleven days. This situation stands in stark contrast to the previous year, where officials prevented over 1,600 individuals from entering Lithuania through unauthorized routes. This year, only 37 illegal migrants have been stopped thus far, indicating a significant drop in crossings amid an ongoing migration crisis triggered by the political situation in Belarus.
Since the escalation of the migration crisis initiated by Belarus in 2021, the European Union has placed blame on the Minsk regime for facilitating the influx of migrants into Eastern European countries. As a result, Lithuania has taken strict measures to control its border, and since the onset of the crisis, authorities have denied entry to around 24,600 individuals deemed illegal migrants. These measures represent a focused effort by Lithuanian officials to manage the situation effectively amid regional tensions and accusations against Belarus.
The recent decline in migrant crossings raises questions about the effectiveness of these border control measures and the broader implications for regional security. With border agencies in neighboring Latvia and Poland also reporting no significant migrant activity, it is crucial to analyze whether this trend will continue and how it influences ongoing diplomatic relations within the region, particularly concerning Belarus's actions and the EU's response to the border situation.
