VSAT: No illegal migrants detected at the border with Belarus
Lithuanian border guards reported no illegal migrants crossing the border with Belarus, a trend echoed by neighboring Latvia, while Poland turned back 11 individuals attempting to enter the country illegally.
Lithuanian border guards (VSAT) announced that they did not detect any illegal migrants crossing the border from Belarus on Saturday, maintaining a notable decrease in illegal entries compared to the previous year. Similarly, Latvian border control officials reported no incidents of illegal crossings over the same period. In contrast, Polish border guards reported having turned away 11 individuals attempting to illegally enter Poland from Belarus on Friday, highlighting the ongoing challenges of managing migration at the frontiers of the European Union.
The ongoing migration crisis originating from Belarus has seen a significant enforcement response from Lithuania, which has prevented more than 1,600 illegal entrants last year alone, showcasing a drastic reduction this year with only 23 illegal entries recorded thus far. Since the onset of the crisis, which has been linked to political tensions between the West and Belarus, Lithuania has managed to avert a total of 24,600 illegal migrants from entering its territory, underscoring the effectiveness of its border management strategies in response to external pressures.
The surge of migrants towards Eastern European Union countries began in 2021, with accusations directed towards the regime in Minsk for allegedly facilitating these movements as a form of hybrid warfare against the EU. This situation places significant political and social stress on the affected countries, as they navigate the complex interplay of humanitarian obligations and national security concerns. The behavior of Belarus in this context remains a point of contention in EU-Belarus relations, and the responses of neighboring countries are closely monitored as they may influence future policy and cooperation within the region.
