Stream water analyzed after truck carrying 24,000 liters of poison overturns in Piauí

The water of the Esfolado Stream in Bertolínia, Piauí, is being analyzed following the overturning of a truck carrying 24,000 liters of pesticides, raising concerns about environmental contamination.

In Bertolínia, located in southern Piauí, the water from the Esfolado Stream is undergoing analysis due to a serious incident involving a truck that overturned while transporting approximately 24,000 liters of pesticides. The accident has raised alarm about potential environmental contamination, particularly impacting the nearby Balneário Xixá where the stream flows. Local authorities are acting swiftly to assess the situation and mitigate any health risks to the community.

The Piauí State Health Department (Sesapi) has mobilized teams to sample water from five locations along the Esfolado Stream on March 9 and 10. These samples aim to evaluate the extent of any contamination from the incident. Two collection points are situated upstream of the accident site, one at the crash location itself, and two downstream, allowing for a comprehensive assessment of possible dispersal of chemicals. Additionally, samples were taken from a local fish farm about 2.8 kilometers from the incident, where owners reported a strong chemical odor, further emphasizing the urgency of the investigation.

The collected samples were sent to the Central Laboratory of Public Health in Teresina and will also be analyzed by the Instituto Evan to determine their safety and any health risks posed to the local population. The findings from these analyses are critical in informing the community about potential dangers and necessary precautions following this pesticide spill, highlighting the intersection of public health, agriculture, and environmental safety in the region.
