Dirty water is visibly dumped into the Parnaíba River, community reports; 'always green,' says fisherman
The community near the Parnaíba River has reported alarming pollution, with visible sewage being dumped into the water, raising health concerns.
Residents around the Parnaíba River have expressed grave concerns over pollution after TV Clube captured images showing two pipelines discharging dirty sewage directly into the river at various points. On December 20, the footage depicted visibly contaminated liquids being released, with local fisherman Antônio Francisco noting that the situation worsens during the winter due to increased water flow potentially carrying pollutants. He remarks, 'The water is green all the time; it never stopped. We are afraid this could harm our health.'
There is a wastewater treatment station run by the Águas do Piauí company located approximately one kilometer from the contaminated river section. Within this treatment facility, a lagoon filled with waste is entirely covered by water hyacinths, indicating an excess of organic material in the water. This situation has raised concerns among local residents, prompting public server Eudes Rocha to question whether the proliferation of these aquatic plants is a sign of pollution.
The revelation of untreated sewage entering the river poses significant environmental and health risks for the local community. With fishermen relying on the river for their livelihood, the continuous pollution may not only pose immediate threats to their health but also have long-term effects on the aquatic ecosystem. As activists and local authorities are urged to address these issues, residents are left fearing for their well-being and the future of their environment.
