More than half a ton of seafood transported in a van without refrigeration is seized in Recife

The Federal Highway Police seized 630 kilograms of seafood transported without refrigeration in a van in Recife, raising health concerns due to the lack of proper storage.

The Federal Highway Police (PRF) recently confiscated 630 kilograms of seafood being transported in a non-refrigerated van, as the driver was unable to provide proof of proper licensing. During a routine check on the BR-101 highway in Cidade Universitária, Recife, authorities discovered the seafood packed in boxes, raising immediate health concerns regarding the quality and safety of the products due to improper storage conditions. The seizure occurred on Wednesday, October 11, and was reported by the PRF on Thursday.

According to the PRF's statement, the seafood was en route from a distribution center to various locations, some of which were considerably far from its point of origin. This indicates a risk not just to the consumers who would receive this potentially spoiled seafood, but also highlights broader concerns regarding food safety regulations and the enforcement of transportation laws in Brazil. The authorities noted that unregulated transport of perishable goods, especially seafood, poses significant risks to public health.

Following the discovery, the driver and passengers were taken to the Consumer Police station in the Santo Amaro neighborhood to face potential legal repercussions. This incident sheds light on the challenges that regulatory agencies face in monitoring the transport of food products and ensuring compliance with health standards, especially in urban areas. The PRF continues to emphasize the importance of adhering to food safety laws for the protection of consumers and the integrity of food supply chains.
