Former director of a company managed by Lithuanian Railways found guilty of bribery

The former director of 'Gelsauga' was found guilty of creating an illegal public procurement scheme and accepting a significant bribe in Lithuania.

In a significant legal case in Lithuania, V. Ž., the former director of UAB 'Gelsauga', was found guilty of bribery by both first and appellate courts. The conviction stems from his involvement in a conspiracy with other individuals in 2013 to create an illegal public procurement scheme which aimed to ensure that selected companies would win tenders. This scheme involved the corrupt manipulation of public contracts that were meant to be awarded fairly.

Furthermore, V. Ž. was also convicted for demanding and accepting a large bribe amounting to 52,200 Litai (approximately 15,118.16 Euros) in 2012 from the director of UAB 'Viacon statyba', in exchange for a promise that this company would win a public procurement tender organized by 'Gelsauga'. The courts found that the evidence presented against him, including witness testimonies and findings from the criminal intelligence investigations, was collected lawfully and was sufficient to support the convictions.

The judges upheld the credibility of witness testimonies, including those from a co-defendant who had been granted immunity, establishing V. Ž. as an equivalent to a public official due to his managerial role within a state-related company. This case highlights the challenges of corruption within public procurement processes in Lithuania, underscoring the need for transparency and accountability in state-managed companies.
