Former prison officer now convicted
A former prison officer in Vilnius has been convicted for bribery for smuggling prohibited items to an inmate.
A former officer of Vilnius prison has been found guilty by the Vilnius District Court for accepting bribes in exchange for smuggling prohibited items to an inmate. The convicted officer, identified as A. K., was imposed a fine of 7,500 euros under Article 225 of the Criminal Code for his actions, which took place between August and December 2024 while he was a public servant with the Lithuanian Prison Service.
The court found that A. K. had developed a close relationship with an inmate serving a sentence, which led to his involvement in illegal activities. In return for bribes, he agreed to illegally introduce and deliver items that inmates are not permitted to possess within the prison environment. The inmate who received the items was also convicted of bribery under Article 227 of the Criminal Code and was fined 6,000 euros.
This case highlights significant concerns regarding corruption within the prison system in Lithuania. It raises questions about the integrity of prison officials and the measures in place to prevent such misconduct, which can undermine the justice system and safety within correctional facilities.
