Former Director of Ventspils County to be tried for exceeding official authority for selfish purposes
A former executive director in Latvia faces legal proceedings for allegedly misusing his authority to reassign employees before being suspended from his position.
The prosecution announced that a former executive director of the Ventspils municipality is facing accusations related to the misuse of his official powers. As he was aware that the municipal council was set to make a decision regarding his temporary removal from office, the executive director allegedly ordered and coordinated the urgent preparation of documents to reassign three employees within the municipality, aiming to finalize these changes before the council's decision took effect. This action is seen as an attempt to benefit personally from his position right before being suspended.
During an extraordinary meeting of the municipal council, the decision to temporarily suspend the accused from his duties was made. Despite knowing the prohibition on performing his official duties while suspended, the accused reportedly signed the documents prepared for the personnel changes. This included promoting one individual to a managerial position in the municipal administration without the necessary qualifications, while allowing another to retain their previous salary after being reassigned to a less well-paid position. A third employee was also moved to another lower-paying role, despite there being no vacancy for that position at the time.
The implications of this case revolve around the misuse of power in local government and the ethical responsibilities of public officials. Such cases can undermine public trust in local governance and raise questions about accountability and transparency in management decisions. The legal proceedings will scrutinize the extent of the alleged violations and may set a precedent for future cases of similar misconduct within the municipal system in Latvia.
