Aarhus is testing whether cheaper bus tickets can attract more passengers
Aarhus is launching a trial of cheaper bus tickets on select routes to see if it increases ridership.
Aarhus is set to implement a trial offering bus tickets at a reduced price of 15 kroner, starting March 17, for residents living along bus lines 11, 14, and 17. This initiative, which is part of a broader budget agreement for 2026, aims to significantly enhance public transport accessibility in the city. The trial represents a significant push towards making collective transport more affordable for users in Aarhus, reflecting an awareness of the importance of reducing travel costs for commuters.
The reduced fare initiative will be available to the citizens of Aarhus until the summer of 2027. During this period, city officials will monitor the acceptability and impact of the cheaper bus tickets, focusing particularly on whether there is a noticeable increase in ridership. This could indicate a successful strategy in keeping public transport equitable and appealing to a broader audience.
After the trial concludes, the City of Aarhus's Technical and Environmental department, in collaboration with Midttrafik, will evaluate the effects of the cheaper tickets. The evaluation will consider the overall changes in bus passenger numbers, providing essential data to inform future decisions about public transport pricing and operations in Aarhus.
